Living ArchitectureEurope is the world's greatest open-air architecture museum — centuries of building traditions on your doorstep
Sustainability LeadershipEuropean programs lead globally in passive building, net-zero design, and circular construction methodologies
Design ExcellencePrograms across the continent set global benchmarks for architectural thinking and spatial design education
Urban LaboratoryEuropean cities offer unparalleled case studies in urban renewal, heritage conservation, and city planning
Few places teach architecture as vividly as Europe, where the entire history of the built environment — Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, modernist, and contemporary — stands within walking distance of the studio. But the appeal is not only heritage. European architecture is at the forefront of the questions that now define the profession: how to decarbonize buildings, how to retrofit rather than demolish, and how to plan dense, livable, low-car cities. Schools across the continent treat the city itself as a laboratory, and many sit close to the planning authorities and practices doing this work. The training is rigorous and studio-based, combining design, structures, history, and increasingly computational and sustainable design methods. English-taught master's programs are growing, though students should know that becoming a licensed, practicing architect is regulated and the path varies by country. Specializations span architecture, urban planning, landscape and interior architecture, historic preservation, computational design, and housing. Graduates work in architecture and urban-design practices across Europe and beyond, but also in planning authorities, sustainability and heritage consultancies, real-estate development, and the growing field of computational and parametric design that is reshaping how buildings are conceived and made.

This master's program offers advanced training in urban design with a focus on revitalizing culturally significant and historically rich urban areas. It combines theoretical insight with hands-on experience, equipping students to address contemporary urban challenges such as sustainability, socio-spatial disparities, and demographic shifts. The curriculum integrates urban design, development, and conservation across various scales and includes design-based projects, interdisciplinary collaboration, and international exposure.
Students may choose between a standard four-semester track or a double degree option involving study at partner universities in Cairo and Alexandria. The double degree structure enhances understanding of urban processes in both the MENA region and Europe. Graduates will be prepared to lead sustainable urban transformation projects, work across cultural and economic contexts, and apply holistic strategies rooted in the Historic Urban Landscape approach.
This master's program is designed for applicants with a background in architecture, urban design, urban planning, regional planning, landscape planning, or landscape architecture. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to analyze urban development challenges, define tasks and strategies, and design coherent and well-reasoned concepts. Proof of English language proficiency is required, with accepted scores including a minimum of 79 on the TOEFL iBT, 6.0 on IELTS, Grade B on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, or Grade C on the Certificate of Proficiency in English. Architecture RISEBA University of Applied Sciences
This bachelor's program in architecture is structured around nine key modules that blend creative, technical, and theoretical components. Students develop their skills through architectural design, fine arts, and urban planning while gaining essential knowledge in construction technology and project management. The curriculum also includes studies in architecture history and theory, humanities and social subjects, and economics and law relevant to the built environment. Practical experience is integrated through internships, and the program culminates with a bachelor's thesis.
To apply for this bachelor's program in architecture, candidates must have completed secondary or vocational education recognized in the host country. Admission is based on a competitive selection process using results from centralized exams in English, Mathematics, and other relevant subjects. If English proficiency cannot be proven with a CE score of B2 or higher or an accepted international certificate (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL), an entrance exam in English must be taken. Applicants must also pass an entrance exam in drawing and composition unless they completed an accredited pre-training course. Additionally, candidates must submit a portfolio (12 A3 pages, horizontal, in PDF format) showcasing their creativity, individuality, and skills in areas such as drawing, drafting, composition, sketching, painting or sculpture, photography, and a free choice. Applicants with foreign education are exempt from centralized exams but must take the university’s admission test.
Engineering for Historic Building Rehabilitation University of Bologna
The program in Engineering for Historic Building Rehabilitation focuses on the conservation and structural enhancement of heritage structures. It covers construction technologies, seismic safety, architectural conservation, and materials science, with a strong emphasis on cultural heritage and historic masonry. Courses address both the technical and historical aspects of building preservation. In the second year, students undertake advanced design and rehabilitation work and can choose between a thesis-only final project or options involving internships or international mobility. Electives allow further specialization in materials, environmental impact, and sustainable structural practices.
Admission to the program requires a degree in civil engineering, architecture, or building sciences, or the fulfillment of specific credit requirements in architecture, engineering, and mathematics/physics subject areas. Candidates with foreign qualifications are assessed individually for alignment with these criteria. Students who have not yet graduated may apply if they have earned at least 165 ECTS. Proficiency in English at B2 CEFR level is mandatory and must be proven through accepted certificates or qualifying academic background. While Italian is not required for admission, basic knowledge is necessary for a mandatory second-year course. EU students typically pay around €1,200/year based on family income.
