A PhD in Architecture in Europe is a 3–5 year research degree — and one of the most financially accessible doctoral paths in the world. In Northern and Western Europe, PhD positions are typically employment contracts: you receive a monthly stipend (commonly €1,200–€2,500 depending on country) plus social security and healthcare, rather than paying tuition or taking on debt. You begin original research immediately, without the coursework years required by the US system.

Dedicated funding programs strengthen that picture: the EU's Marie Curie Doctoral Networks offer stipends above €3,000/month to cohorts of early-stage researchers; the European Research Council (ERC) backs individual projects at leading universities; and national schemes — Germany's DFG, France's CIFRE, the Netherlands' NWO — fund doctoral researchers directly. Many Architecture PhD programs run entirely in English, and some offer cotutelle agreements allowing joint supervision with a university in your home country.

Architecture Kaunas University of Technology – KTU

This doctoral program is delivered jointly with a partner academy of arts, focusing on advanced research in architecture and urbanism, innovative design methodologies, and critical approaches to contemporary architectural challenges. Students are given the opportunity to conduct independent research, generate new knowledge and insights, and analyze complex architectural issues.

Core coursework includes a seminar on developing an art project, artistic research methods, transdisciplinary research methods, and a writing workshop tailored to artist-researchers. Students can further individualize their studies through a wide range of elective modules spanning architectural criticism, architectural utopias and experimental practices, contemporary architectural theory, cultural policy, the history and theory of photography, energy efficiency in buildings, innovative computer modelling methods, media theories and practices, the philosophy and trends of contemporary architecture, the sociology of culture, statistical methods in the social sciences, the theory and heritage of modern architecture, the theory and practice of curating, and the concept of urban genotypes, among other topics spanning architectural theory, digital and computational methods, and cultural studies.

Alongside these subject-specific modules, students build core research competencies through a dedicated set of skills modules, including academic and technical research writing, design thinking in research, digital tools for research writing and publication, research data management, research ethics, grant management for research projects, science communication for public audiences, and systematic literature review methods.
Applicants must hold a master's degree in architecture or the arts, or an equivalent higher education qualification. Admission is based on a weighted competition score combining the applicant's portfolio (40%), the creative component of their proposed art research project (20%), the theoretical component of that research project (20%), and an interview (20%). Applicants must reach a minimum competitive score of 7.0 to be admitted.

Architecture Slovak University of Technology – STU

This doctoral degree centers on independent research and creative work in the field of architecture and urbanism, in which candidates develop and publicly defend a dissertation on a topic selected from a set of research areas proposed by the faculty. The program treats architectural research as spanning scientific, technological, and artistic dimensions, and candidates are expected to demonstrate the capacity for original, independent work across these dimensions from the point of admission.

The degree is offered on a full-time basis, completed in three years, or on a part-time basis, completed in four years.
Applicants must hold a completed master's or engineering-level university degree; those who completed this degree abroad must have their qualification officially recognized under Slovak law governing the recognition of foreign education. Admission to the architecture and urbanism field is limited to graduates of architecture or closely related fields, subject to assessment by the admissions committee.

Admission is decided through an in-person oral interview, which may be conducted remotely in justified cases, combined with a written English-language test. The interview evaluates the applicant's subject knowledge related to their proposed dissertation topic, their potential for independent research and creative work in science, technology, and art, and their professional and language proficiency. Scoring is based on a 100-point scale: up to 60 points for the interview and assessment of research potential, up to 20 points for English proficiency, up to 10 points for the dissertation project outline, and up to 10 points for prior academic achievements, awards, and international activities, with a minimum of 51 points required to pass. The evaluation also takes into account the applicant's publication record, creative and artistic achievements and awards, performance in their prior degree, participation in research competitions, and experience with international academic mobility.

Applicants must submit a CV, a letter of motivation describing their chosen dissertation topic, a short outline of the proposed dissertation project (recommended at three to five pages, covering the introduction, objectives, current state of the field, and expected outcomes), a list of publications or creative works and related activities or awards, a transcript from their master's or engineering studies, and a certified copy of their degree diploma. Applicants who have not yet completed their final examinations at the time of application must submit verified proof of completion once available.

Architecture and Urban Design Estonian Academy of Arts

This doctoral program is organized around two main directions of research: traditional theoretical, text-based research and experimental design-based research, with the latter further divided into creative practice research and research by design. Doctoral candidates work within domains spanning urban studies, planning, urban design, architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture, with the program aiming to develop and critically reflect on the creation, histories, theories, and philosophy underlying these fields.

The program's core aims include generating new professional knowledge that connects spatial issues to broader contemporary societal problems, developing and introducing new skills, knowledge, and professional competencies that advance sustainable environmental development, and building the capacity to collaborate with researchers from other fields. Doctoral candidates are also expected to develop existing methods and create new strategies for research in spatial matters, while taking part in international cooperation among researchers and creative professionals working on questions of space. Overall, the program aims to cultivate research that is creative, contemporary, sustainable, innovative, interdisciplinary, and international in character.

Candidates have the opportunity to pursue a joint doctoral degree through a cotutelle agreement with a partner institution abroad, enrolling in both schools and benefiting from joint supervision through a shared practice research seminar system; successful candidates qualify for a doctoral degree at both institutions upon completion. The typical duration of the program is four years.
Applicants must hold a master's degree or another qualification recognized as providing access to doctoral-level study in Estonia, along with English proficiency at the B2 level; qualifications obtained abroad are assessed and recognized through the Estonian ENIC/NARIC Centre. The application includes copies of the applicant's bachelor's and master's degree certificates and academic transcripts, together with certified translations where needed, an English proficiency certificate, and a copy of a passport or ID.

Applicants must also submit a CV, a motivation letter specifying which doctoral position or track they are applying for, and a proposal for their doctoral thesis. A portfolio is required for applicants pursuing an artistic or practice-based doctoral thesis, while a defended master's thesis is considered sufficient supporting material for those pursuing a text-based doctoral thesis. Applicants are not required to have identified a supervisor in advance, though if they have one, the supervisor's academic CV may be included, along with their name and contact details in the thesis proposal.

Admission is decided through an individual interview of approximately twenty minutes, evaluated on a scale of 0 to 10 based on the interview together with the applicant's portfolio and thesis proposal, assessing the adequacy of the submitted materials and the applicant's readiness to undertake doctoral study. The final score weighs the doctoral thesis proposal most heavily, followed by the level of the applicant's creative work, and finally their professional competence and motivation.
