Molecular Biology KU Leuven

This master's program focuses on advanced molecular biology and includes two specialization profiles: Biotechnology for Global Health, which emphasizes topics like molecular parasitology, and protein structure and function, and Agro- and Plant Biotechnology, which covers plant disease biology and plant genetic engineering. Students begin with core courses in subjects such as analytical biochemistry, immunology, molecular microbiology, and genetic engineering, along with two research rotations. The second year includes topics like micro- and nanobiotechnology and global biotechnology challenges. Electives allow students to explore areas such as bioinformatics, cell signaling, plant breeding, animal science, and crop production, contributing to a strong interdisciplinary and research-oriented education.
Applicants to this master's program must hold a bachelor's or master's degree in fields such as bioengineering sciences, biochemistry and biotechnology, biology, or biomedical sciences. Degrees in related areas like chemistry, veterinary medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, or medicine may also be considered, but admission depends on a full evaluation of the application file. There is no entrance exam; admission is based on academic qualifications, background, and language proficiency. English proficiency can be proven with a Belgian high school diploma, confirmation of English as the language of instruction, or a recognized test: TOEFL iBT (minimum score 79), IELTS Academic (minimum 6.5), Cambridge English (minimum 170), or ITACE (minimum B2). Test results must be no more than five years old at the time of application.

Industrial Chemistry for Circular and Bio Economy

Industrial Chemistry for Circular and Bio Economy University of Naples Federico II

This joint master's degree, delivered jointly by two Italian universities, prepares students to develop new processes and products for the chemical industry through the lens of the circular and bio economy, reflecting a growing emphasis on cross-disciplinary training to support the transition toward a greener, more sustainable economy.

Because students join with varying academic backgrounds, the first semester offers one of two alignment paths to build a shared foundation. One path deepens knowledge in biochemistry, microbiology, and biotechnology, aimed at students whose prior studies leaned toward the biological sciences, with a focus on the aspects of each discipline most relevant to the program's applied themes.

The other path deepens knowledge in inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry, aimed at students whose prior studies leaned more toward core chemistry, again with an emphasis on theoretical and experimental aspects relevant to the program's applied focus. This first semester combines online instruction with in-person teaching workshops held at the end of the term.

From the second semester onward, all students follow a shared curriculum delivered in person, building a solid grounding in industrial chemistry, biotechnology, and chemical plant operations. Training progresses from laboratory-based research through the development and management of pilot plants to an understanding of the structure and operation of full industrial plants, preparing students to develop, manage, and evaluate products, materials, and processes at an industrial scale, within the bounds of sustainable chemistry and applicable ethical standards.

Students can choose to take on a real-world challenge proposed by an industry partner in place of standard elective coursework, building practical expertise geared toward the job market. The program concludes with an internship and a dissertation, both carried out in close collaboration with companies working in the circular and bio economy sector, involving laboratory work, the processing and synthesis of research findings, and the presentation of results.
Admission requires certified English proficiency at CEFR level B2, which can also be completed during the first year of study if not already held at enrollment. Applicants must also satisfy one of three academic background pathways: a degree from an Italian program specifically in chemical sciences and technologies; a degree from a related Italian program, such as biotechnology, biological sciences, or industrial engineering, provided the applicant has completed at least 8 credits in mathematics, 6 in physics, 15 in chemistry, and 15 in related subjects such as agricultural, biological, or industrial-engineering sciences; or a foreign degree, such as in chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology, or biology, with content equivalent to one of the above. Applicants must also have completed their most recent degree within the past seven years and have achieved a graduation grade of at least 65%.

The admissions process requires submitting a set of application materials, including a CV, bachelor's degree certificate, diploma supplement, passport copy, English proficiency certificate, and a motivational letter, along with any recommendation letters. Shortlisted applicants complete an online interview in which they present their bachelor's thesis or final academic project.
