Cellular and Genetic Engineering KU Leuven

This master's program delivers an in-depth education in cellular and genetic engineering within biotechnology, combining a strong scientific core with hands-on laboratory training and research. The curriculum consists of compulsory segments: a master’s thesis (completed in two parts), a major package, a minor package, and elective courses. Core topics include advanced genetics, immunology, plant and animal physiology, microbial and nanobiology, bioinformatics, applied computational biology, and molecular biotechnology. Students also explore applications through courses like applied plant, animal, medical, and synthetic biotechnology. They must select a minor (general, thematic, or reorientation) of at least 17 ECTS, covering specialized areas such as health engineering, environmental coordination, entrepreneurship, or data science. The program features practicals, seminars, project management, and the option of an internship.
To apply for this master's program, candidates must hold an academic bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering (such as bioscience, biomedical, civil, electrical, or a related field) or an equivalent qualification. The degree must include substantial coursework in mathematics, statistics, physics, and general engineering, as well as at least some courses in biology and physiology. Applicants should have graduated with at least a second class upper result or its equivalent from a recognized institution. All candidates must demonstrate English language proficiency unless their previous degree was fully taught in English in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, or the USA. Accepted English tests include TOEFL iBT (minimum 94), IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0), and Cambridge Advanced/Proficiency (minimum 185), each with minimum required subscores.
