This PhD program offers advanced research training across various subject areas, aiming to provide candidates with deep theoretical and methodological expertise and experience in carrying out a major research project that meets international standards. The program consists of three years of full-time study (180 ECTS credits) and requires successful completion of compulsory coursework, an academic thesis, a trial lecture, and a public defense. There is also an option for a four-year track with a work component, depending on the candidate's agreement and specialization. Specialization tracks are available in health and nursing science, psychosocial health, public health, and sport science and physical education, allowing candidates to focus their research within their chosen field.

To apply for this PhD program, candidates must have accepted a research fellow position or secured external funding, and hold a master's degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area. For admission to specializations in health and nursing science or psychosocial health, applicants need at least 90 ECTS credits in related subjects at the master's level. A grade of B or above on the master's thesis and an average grade of B or higher in relevant master's courses are required. If an applicant lacks adequate background in methodology, statistics, or other relevant fields, additional graduate-level exams or assignments may be required within six months of admission. The application process includes submitting a project description of up to ten pages, and applications are accepted year-round.

This doctoral program offers advanced, in-depth training in sports sciences, combining rigorous theoretical study with sustained research training under the mentorship of experienced supervisors. Students build the ability to think critically, analyze data creatively, and solve complex problems independently, while developing strong written and oral communication skills for presenting research findings to a wide range of audiences. The program also cultivates a proactive, collaborative approach to research, grounded in strong research ethics and an openness to new methods.

The program unfolds in two stages. The first two-year period focuses on structured training and research, concluding with a comprehensive examination that must be completed by the end of the fourth semester. The second two-year period centers on independent research and the dissertation itself, and begins once a student has successfully completed the training phase and passed the comprehensive examination; students who already meet the necessary academic and administrative requirements may bypass the first stage and proceed directly into dissertation research.

Students pursue their research within one of four program areas. Training and Adaptation focuses on how the body responds and adapts to physical training. Physical Training, Regulation, Metabolism examines the physiological regulation and metabolic processes underlying physical training. Sport and Social Sciences explores sport through a social scientific lens, examining its broader social dimensions and impact. Educational Science and Sportpedagogy focuses on the pedagogical and educational dimensions of sport and physical education.

Graduates are well prepared for careers in academia, research, and the sports industry, equipped with the advanced knowledge and research skills needed for scientific research and roles in higher education within sports sciences.

Applicants must hold a postgraduate degree, or be in their final year of master's study, to be eligible for admission.

This doctoral program centers on an independent dissertation project supported by a strong methodological and theoretical foundation, preparing researchers for high-level scientific work while promoting international engagement and collaboration with relevant research communities. Full-time study is designed to lead to completion within three to four years, and applicants choose one specialization at the time of application.

The specialization in Sport and Exercise Sciences leads to a target degree of either Doctor of Sport Sciences or Doctor of Philosophy. The specialization in Health Sciences leads to a target degree of either Doctor of Health Sciences or Doctor of Philosophy. Graduates who enter the program from a background outside sport or health sciences are always awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree, regardless of chosen specialization.

Beyond the dissertation itself, doctoral researchers complete 40 ECTS credits of postgraduate coursework as defined in the applicable curriculum. The dissertation must present new scientific findings and justified results, demonstrate the candidate's critical thinking, deep knowledge of the research field, and command of scientific research methods, and adhere to standards of research integrity; it may take the form of either a monograph or an article-based dissertation, and is defended in a public examination.

Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree from a university or university of applied sciences, or an equivalent qualification from abroad that provides eligibility for doctoral-level study in the country where it was awarded, issued by an institution formally recognized within that country's higher education system. The faculty does not restrict eligibility to specific academic fields; instead, the proposed supervisor evaluates whether the applicant's prior studies provide sufficient grounding in the discipline, familiarity with scientific research methods, and understanding of research ethics to support the intended doctoral project.

Applicants generally need a grade of at least "Good" (3 out of 5), or an equivalent standard, on the thesis from their qualifying degree. If the thesis was not graded, this requirement does not apply; if it was graded below this threshold, applicants may instead demonstrate equivalent competence through a scientific publication or other research report, subject to assessment by the supervisor and the evaluation group. Applicants must also submit a research and doctoral study plan using the faculty's required templates, which is evaluated on the strength of its scientific justification, the coherence of its research questions and methods, the feasibility of its design, and the realism of its funding plan and schedule. A minimum of two supervisors is required, including a supervisor-in-charge employed by the university and at least one additional supervisor holding docent-level standing or higher, along with an appointed follow-up group; applicants must identify their supervisors and follow-up group members and include a signed approval form with their application. Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in Finnish or English, and if the qualifying degree has not yet been formally awarded, a conditional admission decision may be granted, provided the applicant meets the remaining requirements by a specified deadline.
