The "occupation" in occupational therapy refers not to employment but to the purposeful activities — self-care, work, leisure, social participation — that constitute daily life and that illness, injury, or disability can disrupt. OT is a genuinely holistic health profession: practitioners assess the interaction between the person, the activity, and the environment, and intervene at all three levels — adapting activities, modifying environments, and developing client skills. European programs combine theoretical foundations (occupational science, activity analysis, rehabilitation frameworks), clinical reasoning, and substantial supervised fieldwork in hospitals, mental health services, care homes, schools, and community settings. OT is a regulated profession across Europe requiring national registration, and the career market is stable: OTs are in demand in mental health, pediatric services, geriatric care, and vocational rehabilitation settings across the continent.

Что на самом деле ищут программы и работодатели

Occupational therapy is typically an undergraduate entry-level profession in many European countries, with master's programs available for continuing professional development or specialization. Entry requires evidence of patient contact or care experience — voluntary or paid work in a care, mental health, or rehabilitation setting is strongly advised before applying. OT programs are practically oriented: interviews typically include discussion of why OT rather than physiotherapy, nursing, or social work, and clear articulation of OT's distinct philosophical basis (occupational focus, client-centered practice) is expected. Accreditation by the relevant national OT professional body should be confirmed. Programs in the UK, Netherlands, and Scandinavia are among the most internationally recognized.

Occupational Therapy Jönköping University

This flexible, fully online master's degree deepens expertise in occupational therapy, research methodology, and leadership, preparing students for specialist roles, development work, and doctoral study within an international learning environment. It equips students to critically analyze, develop, and lead occupational therapy practice across diverse contexts, while examining how socio-cultural and intersectional factors shape people's health from an occupational perspective. Students study co-production in health and welfare and team collaboration within changing organizations, and interact throughout with students from other disciplines and countries, building multicultural and interprofessional communication and collaboration skills.

The first year combines a course in the theory of science and scientific method with foundational occupational therapy coursework spanning theory, evidence-based practice, and the occupational perspective of health, along with an interdisciplinary course introducing artificial intelligence in health and welfare; this half concludes with a 15-credit independent thesis. The second year builds on this with coursework in team collaboration within changing organizations, co-production in health and welfare, research design and ethics, and advanced occupational therapy theory and evidence-based practice, concluding with a second 15-credit independent thesis, for 30 credits of independent research in total; students may build on their first thesis topic in the second or choose a different one, or may alternatively complete a single combined 30-credit thesis. Teaching combines lectures, seminars, workshops, group projects, and digital discussion, assessed through written reports, projects, and oral presentations, and the degree can be completed full-time in 2 years or part-time in 4 years; there is no clinical internship within the program, though evidence-based and community-based practice coursework involves applying practical skills.

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge of sustainable, evidence-based practice applicable across settings such as government sectors, home health care, hospitals and rehabilitation centers, occupational health care, private practice, schools, and social care, and are prepared for specialist clinical roles, leadership positions, quality development, and project management. The degree also opens the door to doctoral study in occupational therapy, rehabilitation, or related fields, and for occupational therapists already practicing in Sweden, can support further specialization within the field.
Applicants must hold at least a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy, equivalent to 180 ECTS credits from an accredited university, or the equivalent; proof of English proficiency is also required.

Applications can be submitted either through the university's own direct application system, where admission is processed on a rolling basis, or through Sweden's central university admissions system, where selection is based on previous academic merits and ranked in descending order.

To be awarded the degree, students must complete at least 120 credits at the graduate level, including 60 credits in occupational therapy, comprising either two 15-credit thesis courses or one combined 30-credit thesis, along with all other mandatory coursework or its equivalent.
