Graduates are prepared for careers teaching English as a second language, as well as roles in mass media, advertising, public relations, publishing, and content writing.

Applicants must have completed secondary education, holding a high school leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification such as GCE A Levels or the International Baccalaureate. Applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency, which can be met through a secondary school certificate or a bachelor's degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction, or through an internationally recognized English-language qualification at CEFR level B2 or above; this requirement is waived for applicants holding British, Canadian, Australian, US, or New Zealand nationality. Applicants who cannot provide valid proof of English proficiency are required to take an online English placement test, the results of which determine whether additional English language support courses are needed alongside the degree program.

The program is part of an international language-education framework that allows students to spend up to half of their studies at partner universities in Spain and France, with additional input from professional language-industry experts.

A school transcript must be submitted in English, accompanied by official translations and certified copies where the original is unavailable, and all documents must be legalized with an apostille from the issuing country's foreign affairs ministry, except for documents issued within the EU or in Belarus and Ukraine.

Students taking it as a major choose between an English or an American specialization at the end of their first term. The three-year program does not lead to a teaching qualification.

Students in the English specialization build on this foundation with further language and academic skills development, deeper seminars in English literature and interdisciplinary approaches to reading culture and literary texts, cultural studies, and an extensive linguistics sequence covering advanced phonology and syntax, the history of the English language, and applied linguistics. This track develops academic research, evaluation, and critical thinking skills in English literature and British and American sociopolitical history, alongside a detailed understanding of the linguistic description and analysis of English.

Students in the American specialization instead build on the shared foundation with a dedicated American language development sequence and scholarly writing, further coursework in American literature and culture, including American popular culture and the study of Canada, further United States history, and linguistics coursework focused on phonology, syntax, and American English. This track develops familiarity with the background and distinctive features of American history, culture, literature, and the American variety of English, building critical thinking and research skills for further study or the job market.

After completing free elective coursework, students choose either a minor at another institute or a further concentration within the school. Options include a flexible, pick-and-choose module spanning English or American literature, the history of England or the United States, linguistics, applied linguistics, English-speaking cultures, or drama; a media-focused track covering journalism, broadcast production, digital storytelling, and the language of social media; a business-focused track covering business communication, correspondence, presentations, and data analysis, which includes a required internship; a translation-focused track, which requires proficiency in Hungarian, covering the translation of legal, business, and specialized academic texts; or a film-and-culture track examining British, American, Irish, Canadian, and Australian cinema. The program concludes with a thesis, completed under individual academic supervision, and a final examination.

Graduates are eligible to continue into an MA in English Studies, American Studies, or a similar philological degree, and go on to work in fields such as journalism, tourism, teaching in non-state schools, government organizations, and diplomacy, as well as other roles that do not require degree-specific skills.

Applicants must hold a secondary school certificate of matriculation equivalent to the Hungarian standard, required for admission to university-level study; if the certificate is not in English, an official translation must be provided. Applicants still completing secondary education may submit proof of enrollment or expected matriculation instead, provided they present their final certificate by the time of enrollment. This program is not available to Hungarian citizens.

English proficiency must be demonstrated at a minimum of B2 level, with preferred scores of 72 to 94 on the TOEFL iBT, at least 5.5 on the IELTS, or at least 100 on Duolingo; proficiency is assessed during the oral admission interview.

Applicants must hold a master's diploma with at least a "good" qualification, and should contact the head of their intended doctoral program before applying. A letter of acceptance from a future supervisor is required, and applications are considered only for research topics offered by the doctoral school's supervisors.

English proficiency must reach at least B2 level in both speaking and writing, though the Language Pedagogy and English Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and English Linguistics programs require C1 level. Proficiency is demonstrated through one of a specific set of accepted exams: TOEFL PBT (516-554), TOEFL iBT or iBT Home Edition (66-82), IELTS (6.0), CEFR (B2), or Duolingo (85). A prior Bachelor's or Master's diploma earned entirely in English is accepted as proof instead; native English speakers must instead present a B2-level or higher exam in another language.
