Accounting and Auditing Kaunas University of Technology – KTU

This master's degree prepares accounting and auditing professionals capable of assessing and controlling complex business processes, with the underlying program holding international accreditation from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), ensuring that the knowledge and competencies gained are internationally recognized. It is offered on a flexible schedule combining face-to-face and distance learning, allowing students to balance study with an ongoing career, and graduates go on to hold strategic positions ranging from heads of finance departments to partners in international accounting firms.

The first semester covers auditing fundamentals, ethics and social responsibility, financial reporting, international taxation and transfer pricing, and strategic management accounting.

The second semester builds on this with a further course in auditing, a second financial reporting course, internal auditing, property and business valuation, and value-based management.

The third semester introduces a research project and scientific research design, together with a choice of research methods such as qualitative research, quantitative research, or quantitative methods combined with financial modeling. Students then choose between a two-part, challenge-based project addressing a real strategic problem at an organization, or a set of electives covering business model innovation, project management, and strategic management.

The program concludes with a master's degree final project in the fourth semester.

Across the program, students learn to apply risk-based audit concepts, apply international financial reporting standards, and model international taxation and transfer pricing situations, along with preparing and analyzing the financial statements of companies and groups of companies according to international standards. Students also develop skills in asset and business valuation, internal audit planning, and research methods, learning to design a research study, apply appropriate quantitative or qualitative methods, and analyze, interpret, and present findings on topics in accounting, auditing, management accounting, or business valuation.

The underlying university holds accreditation recognized internationally as a mark of excellence in business education, and teaching is delivered by accounting and auditing experts who combine research experience with academic and practical background. Students have the opportunity to study part-time abroad through structured exchange arrangements, including short intensive international programs, and can take part in a hands-on challenge project addressing real strategic-level problems at partner companies or organizations. Exchange opportunities are available at partner universities abroad, including institutions in Italy, Germany, and Latvia.

Graduates go on to work as heads of accounting, formulating and implementing an organization's accounting policy, managing accounting teams, and designing performance evaluation systems; as audit specialists, examining the accuracy of financial information, addressing international taxation issues, and proposing improvements to risk management and efficiency; or as risk management experts, coordinating the gathering and interpretation of information, identifying risk factors, and organizing an enterprise's risk and control management processes.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS credits in business and public management or the social sciences, and must demonstrate English proficiency through an IELTS score of at least 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 85, a CEFR level of at least C1, or evidence of having previously studied in English. A transcript of the bachelor's degree must be submitted in English, accompanied by official translations and certified copies where the original is unavailable, and all documents must be legalized with an apostille from the issuing country's foreign affairs ministry, except for documents issued within the EU or in Belarus and Ukraine.

Admission is based primarily on the average grade of the applicant's bachelor's degree and its diploma supplement, which accounts for 90% of the score, with a motivation letter and online interview accounting for the remaining 10%. Applicants can also earn up to four additional points based on factors such as prior scientific or artistic activity, at least one year of work experience in the field, participation in an academic talent development program, partial studies abroad involving at least 24 ECTS credits, or a bachelor's or master's degree awarded with honors.

Finance master's programs in Europe are highly diverse: there are generalist master's in finance, highly quantitative financial engineering programs, specialized masters in sustainable finance, and part-time programs for working professionals. The most career-impactful programs at the top schools open doors to investment banking, asset management, and consulting roles that bachelor's graduates don't access directly. INSEAD, HEC Paris, Rotterdam, and London Business School's master's finance programs have particularly strong placement records. The quantitative programs at ETH Zurich and other technical universities are valued for roles in risk, trading, and financial technology.

Research opportunities

Financial economics research master's programs exist but are rare — most finance master's are professional rather than academic. If finance research is the goal, economics or financial mathematics master's programs at research universities are typically more appropriate.

Career outcomes

A master's in finance from a strong European school delivers a significant salary premium over a bachelor's for entry-level roles in investment banking, asset management, and financial consulting. The network effect of European top finance programs is real and persistent.
