Scholarships for British Students in Germany

DAAD, Marshall, Chevening-equivalent funding, and bilateral exchange — your options as a UK student.

Overview: funding for British students in Germany

Strong bilateral ties mean real opportunities

Germany and the UK have a long history of academic exchange. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) has offices in London and actively recruits British students for its scholarship programs. The Marshall Scholarship — the UK's most prestigious scholarship for postgraduate study in any English-speaking country — does not include Germany, but DAAD's own postgraduate programs fill that gap. Additionally, the British Council funds a range of UK-outbound mobility programs and research exchanges with Germany.

Key scholarships for British students in Germany

DAAD Scholarship (Postgraduate)

DAAD awards scholarships to British students for full degree programs and research stays in Germany. Monthly stipend of €850–€1,200 (varies by level and program). Open to students with a strong academic record (typically first-class or upper-second-class degree). Application through daad.de — DAAD London office (Belgrave Square, London) runs information sessions throughout the year.

DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)

Undergraduates in science, engineering, and natural sciences can apply for DAAD RISE — a 10–12 week summer research internship at a German university or research institute. Very popular with UK physics, chemistry, and engineering students. Provides a stipend to cover living costs. Applications typically open in October for the following summer.

Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowship

Supports doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from the UK to undertake research at Germany's Helmholtz research centers — Europe's largest scientific organization. Covers natural sciences, engineering, energy, earth sciences, and health. Duration: 1–2 years.

British Council Researcher Links

The British Council funds workshops and travel grants enabling UK researchers to establish partnerships with German counterparts. Primarily aimed at early-career researchers but provides a route into German research networks. Check britishcouncil.org/education for current opportunities.

Turing Scheme (UK Government)

The Turing Scheme replaced Erasmus+ for UK students after Brexit. Provides grants for UK students to study or undertake work placements abroad, including Germany. Funding is awarded through UK universities — check with your home institution whether they participate. Note: unlike Erasmus, Turing does not provide reciprocal funding for German students to come to the UK.

Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes

Germany's most prestigious national scholarship foundation. Primarily aimed at German students, but can also support particularly outstanding international students enrolled in German degree programs. Nomination is via the university — speak to your department once enrolled.

Remember: Germany already saves you £25,000+

Most British students don't need a scholarship to make Germany viable

Because German public universities charge no tuition fees to British students, the financial case for Germany already works without a scholarship. Unlike UK postgraduate study (where fees of £10,000–£25,000/year are standard), a master's in Germany costs €300–€700 in total semester contributions. A DAAD scholarship makes the experience exceptional — but the absence of one doesn't make Germany financially inaccessible.
