Slovenia is one of Europe's most pleasant surprises as a study destination — a small, prosperous EU country nestled between Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary, with an academic tradition anchored by the University of Ljubljana (founded 1919) and the University of Maribor. Ljubljana itself consistently ranks among Europe's most livable small capitals, with excellent infrastructure, a compact and walkable city center, and easy access to the Alps, the Adriatic coast, and three neighboring countries. English-taught programs are growing, particularly at postgraduate level.

Academic Qualifications

How Slovenia recognizes foreign secondary school and university qualifications

Slovenian universities require a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Slovenian matura certificate (awarded after 13 years of education, including 4 years of secondary school). Foreign qualifications are recognized by CMEPIUS (the Center for Mobility and European Educational and Training Programs), which is Slovenia's ENIC-NARIC center. EU applicants with recognized secondary diplomas generally apply directly to universities without a separate equivalency procedure. Non-EU applicants may need an official recognition decision from CMEPIUS or from the relevant Ministry of Education. For Master's programs, a recognized Bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS in a related field is required.

Language Requirements

How to Apply

Applications go directly to each Slovenian university

  1. Research your target institution. The University of Ljubljana and University of Maribor are the main research universities. The University of Nova Gorica and the University of Primorska are smaller institutions with specific strengths.
  2. Check whether a CMEPIUS recognition decision is required for your secondary school diploma, or whether the university will assess it directly.
  3. Register on your target university's online application system. Some programs also use the eVŠ national higher education information system.
  4. Prepare your language documentation — a Slovenian language certificate for Slovenian-taught programs, or IELTS/TOEFL results for English programs.
  5. Submit your full application package — diploma, transcripts, translations, language certificate, motivation letter, and CV — before the stated deadline.
  6. After receiving your admission offer, non-EU/EEA students apply for a Slovenian long-stay visa (Type D) at the nearest Slovenian Embassy. Upon arrival, register at the local Administrative Unit (Upravna enota) to obtain a residence permit.

Financial Requirements

Proof of sufficient funds for your Slovenian student visa

Non-EU students applying for a Slovenian long-stay study visa must demonstrate sufficient financial resources. Slovenian authorities require proof of at least €540 per month (the Slovenian minimum guaranteed income reference level), or approximately €4,500–€6,500 for a full academic year. Accepted proof includes a bank statement, a sponsor's guarantee letter with bank documents, or a scholarship confirmation. Slovenian public university tuition for EU students is low (around €0–€1,500/year depending on program) and for non-EU students ranges from €2,000–€6,000/year. Ljubljana's living costs are moderate — higher than Eastern EU capitals but below Vienna or Zurich.

Watch Out For

Non-EU students must register with the local Administrative Unit (Upravna enota) within 3 days of arriving in Slovenia — not 90 days. This is a strict legal requirement. Bring your admission letter, passport, proof of accommodation, and health insurance.

The number of English-taught programs at Slovenian universities is more limited than in countries like Estonia or the Netherlands — research available programs carefully before committing.

University dormitory places in Ljubljana are limited and in high demand. Apply for accommodation through your university's housing office immediately after receiving your admission offer.

Slovenia uses the euro, which simplifies financial planning. However, Ljubljana is more expensive than most Eastern EU capitals — budget accordingly.
