A PhD in 지질학·지구과학 in Europe is a 3–5 year research degree — and one of the most financially accessible doctoral paths in the world. In Northern and Western Europe, PhD positions are typically employment contracts: you receive a monthly stipend (commonly €1,200–€2,500 depending on country) plus social security and healthcare, rather than paying tuition or taking on debt. You begin original research immediately, without the coursework years required by the US system.

Dedicated funding programs strengthen that picture: the EU's Marie Curie Doctoral Networks offer stipends above €3,000/month to cohorts of early-stage researchers; the European Research Council (ERC) backs individual projects at leading universities; and national schemes — Germany's DFG, France's CIFRE, the Netherlands' NWO — fund doctoral researchers directly. Many 지질학·지구과학 PhD programs run entirely in English, and some offer cotutelle agreements allowing joint supervision with a university in your home country.

Earth Sciences ELTE – Eötvös Loránd University

This PhD program trains researchers in earth sciences through personalized research projects guided by both academic faculty and professionals from practice, with opportunities for multi- and interdisciplinary work within cohesive research groups. Training is organized around three main programs: Geography and Meteorology, Geology and Geophysics, and Cartography and Geoinformatics.

The Geography and Meteorology program spans physical geography, geomorphology, environmental and landscape geography, the regional geography of Hungary, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Carpathian Basin, human geography, the history of geography, regional science, regional planning, urban studies, and geoinformatics, alongside meteorology topics such as dynamic and synoptic meteorology, boundary layer meteorology, climatology, climate modeling, agroclimatology, and statistical climatology. Coursework draws on subjects including general and regional physical and human geography, urban and regional development, environmental geography, landscape ecology, political geography, urban sociology, soil science, and GIS, together with theoretical meteorology and climatology, atmospheric physics and chemistry, synoptic meteorology, dynamic modeling, agrometeorology, numerical prediction, and satellite and micrometeorology.

The Geology and Geophysics program covers physical and applied geology, hydrogeology, urban geology, petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy, lithology, paleontology, volcanology, sedimentology, space science, and geoinformatics, alongside geophysics. Coursework includes petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy, ore geology, paleontology, paleobotany, the history of the Earth, stratigraphy, sedimentology, regional geology, geodynamics, environmental geology, hydrocarbon geology and basin analysis, and geomathematics, together with geophysics subjects such as gravity, physical geodesy, geomagnetism, seismology, geothermics, the mechanical structure and dynamics of the Earth, applied and near-surface geophysics, and geophysical well-logging.

The Cartography and Geoinformatics program covers thematic cartography, mathematics in cartography, web cartography, the history of cartography, toponymy, and geoinformatics, with coursework spanning map design and production, computer-assisted cartography, map projection, topography, topographic map systems, atlas cartography, GPS, and remote sensing.

The program is organized into two four-semester phases. The first combines coursework with a written report and concludes with a complex examination; the second combines further training with individualized research under a supervisor, requiring a minimum of 20 combined course and research credits per semester. Advancing to the doctoral process requires passing a final qualifying examination, meeting the school's publication and language exam requirements, submitting either an internal thesis defense or a detailed written assessment from the supervisor, and completing the PhD thesis.

Graduates pursue academic careers at universities and research institutes, governmental careers with international organizations, ministries, or regional and local authorities, or business careers at firms working in environmental protection, meteorology, mining, cartography, geoinformatics, or urban and regional planning.
Applicants must hold a master's degree in earth sciences or a related field. Basic knowledge of Hungarian is considered an advantage, though not required. It is the applicant's own responsibility to identify a qualified supervisor at the institute willing to take them on, and to co-write the research plan submitted with the application.

An internationally accredited English language examination at a minimum of B2 CEFR level is required, such as a TOEFL iBT score of at least 72 or an IELTS score of at least 5.5; alternatively, applicants may submit an official certificate from their previous institution confirming that their prior degree was completed entirely in English.

Required documents include an application form, the master's degree certificate, a transcript of records, a CV, a language certificate, a research plan, and a statement from a supervisor; a letter of recommendation, a passport copy and photo, a reference work, and a motivation letter may also be submitted but are optional. Admission includes an oral entrance examination, held in person or remotely, focused on the applicant's academic background and the goals and methods of their proposed research, and may include written exercises to assess qualifications and language proficiency. Rankings are based on prior university achievements, past research accomplishments such as awards or publications, and the feasibility of the proposed research project.
