Lithuania punches above its weight in several specialized fields — the country holds a global leadership position in laser technology and photonics, and Vilnius University's life sciences and physics programs have an international reputation that far exceeds the country's size. Vilnius itself is a compact, safe, and increasingly cosmopolitan city with one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe. For students seeking affordable, high-quality EU education in an underrated destination, Lithuania is worth serious consideration.

Academic Qualifications

How Lithuania assesses foreign qualifications

Lithuanian universities require a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Lithuanian Brandos atestatas (Maturity Certificate), awarded after 12 years of general secondary education. Foreign qualifications are assessed by SKVC (the Center for Quality Assessment in Higher Education — Studijų kokybės vertinimo centras), which is Lithuania's ENIC-NARIC center. EU diplomas are generally recognized directly by the admitting university. Non-EU applicants may need an official SKVC recognition decision. For Master's programs, a recognized Bachelor's degree of at least three years (180 ECTS) in a relevant field is required.

How to Apply

International applicants apply directly to each Lithuanian institution

  1. Research your target institution. Major universities include Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH), Vytautas Magnus University, and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.
  2. Visit the university's international admissions page. Most Lithuanian universities have a dedicated online application portal for international students.
  3. Check whether a SKVC recognition decision is required for your diploma, or whether the university handles this internally.
  4. Prepare your application documents and arrange certified English translations of any documents not already in English or Lithuanian.
  5. Submit your language proficiency certificate — IELTS/TOEFL for English programs. Lithuanian language certificates are required for Lithuanian-taught programs.
  6. After receiving your acceptance, non-EU/EEA students apply for a Lithuanian national visa (Type D) at the nearest Lithuanian Embassy, followed by a temporary residence permit upon arrival.

Required Documents

  • Certified copy of secondary school diploma (Brandos atestatas equivalent)
  • Official transcripts for all completed study
  • Certified English or Lithuanian translation of all documents
  • SKVC recognition decision (if required)
  • Proof of language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or Lithuanian State Language Certificate)
  • Motivation letter / Statement of purpose
  • CV / Résumé
  • Passport copy (valid throughout planned stay)
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of financial means (~€3,500–€5,500/year)
  • Health insurance certificate

Financial Requirements

Proof of funds for a Lithuanian student visa

Non-EU students must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their studies. Lithuanian authorities require proof of at least €380 per month (the Lithuanian state-supported income level), though most consulates and universities recommend showing €500–€600 per month. Tuition for English-taught programs at Lithuanian public universities typically ranges from €1,500 to €6,000 per year. Living costs in Vilnius are among the lowest of any EU capital city.

Watch Out For

Lithuania uses LAMA BPO (a joint admissions center) for domestic students. International students do NOT use LAMA BPO — they apply directly to each university through its international office.

Health sciences and medicine programs at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have their own entrance requirements and much earlier deadlines. Contact that institution directly for its specific procedure.

Lithuania has a relatively small number of university housing options. Off-campus housing in Vilnius is more expensive than in Kaunas or Klaipėda. Arrange accommodation early after receiving your offer.

The SKVC recognition process can take 4–6 weeks. If required, request it well before your application deadline.
