DAAD Study Scholarship, DAAD RISE, Fulbright, and Congress-Bundestag — the main funding routes for Americans.

DAAD scholarships to Americans/year ~600
DAAD study stipend €934/month + health insurance
Fulbright grants (US-Germany) One of the largest Fulbright programs
DAAD RISE stipend €650/month + travel

Germany and the US have one of the most developed bilateral academic exchange relationships in the world. DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) has a dedicated office in New York and awards roughly 600 scholarships to Americans every year. Fulbright US-Germany is one of the largest bilateral Fulbright programs. And for undergraduates, DAAD RISE offers paid research internships in German labs that are genuinely competitive and life-changing. Even without a full scholarship, Germany's zero tuition policy means you are already saving enormously.

How to apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship

  1. Check eligibility: you must be a US citizen or permanent resident, enrolled at or recently graduated from a US university, with a strong academic record (GPA 3.5+ recommended).
  2. Identify a German research supervisor or program. The DAAD scholarship is strongest when you have a specific academic connection in Germany — a professor who has agreed to host your research.
  3. Prepare your application: academic CV, motivation letter (research-focused, specific to Germany), study/research proposal (2–3 pages), official transcripts, two academic references, and language certificates.
  4. Submit via the DAAD portal. The standard deadline for study scholarships is October 15 for the following academic year. Check daad.de for current deadlines.
  5. If selected, attend an interview (conducted online or in New York). Decisions are typically communicated by March–April.

How to apply for DAAD RISE

DAAD RISE placements are posted by German professors on the RISE website from November onward. US undergraduates in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, earth science, or computer science apply directly to professors whose projects interest them. The application opens in December and closes in January for summer placements. You submit a CV, motivation letter, and transcript. Acceptances come out in February–March. The stipend of €650/month plus a travel contribution makes it financially accessible. The program is highly competitive at top research universities — having prior lab experience and a focused application significantly improves your chances.
