Study Early Childhood Education in Europe

This master's program focuses on educational sciences and explores how learning, teaching, and educational systems function in diverse cultural and societal contexts. Students gain skills to critically analyze educational practices and develop inclusive, ethical, and research-based approaches to education. The program offers four specialization tracks: Educational Leadership (focusing on leadership practices and educational change), Curriculum Studies (emphasizing curriculum design and evaluation), Early Childhood Education (concentrating on pedagogy and learning in early years), and Guidance and Counseling (addressing student support and counseling). Core studies cover educational theory, research methods, and collaborative learning, while optional modules and language studies support academic and professional development. Applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s degree and demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to international academic standards.

To apply for this master's program, applicants must hold a recognized higher education degree that qualifies them for master's-level studies in the awarding country, though the degree does not need to be in education. Degrees must be from officially recognized institutions. If the degree is not yet completed at the time of application, conditional admission is possible, provided the final documents are submitted by the specified deadline. Applicants currently enrolled in this same program at the university are not eligible to reapply. English proficiency must be demonstrated through one of several accepted methods, such as completing previous studies in English in specified countries, having English as a major in a Finnish degree, or by reaching the required scores in international English language tests like IELTS (6.5), TOEFL iBT (92), PTE Academic (62), Cambridge exams, or Finland’s National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) with a minimum grade of 5 in all sections.

This bachelor's program trains future kindergarten educators with theoretically grounded knowledge, skills, and competencies in pedagogy, preparing graduates who are capable of and dedicated to educating children aged three to six. It builds students' ability to interpret integrated pre-school activities and to plan, organize, and manage education-related tasks in a psychologically, pedagogically, and methodologically informed way, aimed at creating optimal conditions for child development. The program is delivered in person over three years, entirely in English.

The first semester covers an introduction to psychology, issues in the history of education, an introduction to play in early childhood, the sociology of families, foundational visual arts and puppetry, an introduction to music in kindergarten, native-language teaching methodology, the cultivation of speech and language, and the first part of a physical education teaching methodology sequence, alongside the first of five sequential kindergarten internships and a professional skills seminar.

The second semester continues with play in early childhood education, developmental psychology, research methods, the first part of kindergarten pedagogy, planning for visual skills development, environmental education, further music coursework, storytelling and poetry methodology, and continued physical education methodology, alongside a second internship placement.

The third semester covers a second kindergarten pedagogy course, pedagogical psychology, Hungarian national symbols and holidays in kindergarten practice, the first part of mathematics methodology, creating images and objects, functional anatomy and hygiene, music education methodology, and classic and contemporary children's literature, alongside a third internship placement.

The fourth semester covers inclusive education, a comprehensive exam in pedagogy and psychology, professional ethics, a second mathematics methodology course, environmental studies methodology, further music education methodology, and the practice of digital pedagogy, alongside a fourth internship placement.

The fifth semester covers creative activities in the kindergarten and digital applications in early childhood, along with a fifth internship placement. The program concludes with a comprehensive field internship, a further professional skills course, thesis consultation, and elective coursework.

Students who wish to prepare for bilingual pre-school teaching can additionally follow a dedicated sequence of coursework covering English language preparation, the theory and practice of bilingual pre-school education, phonetics and pronunciation, English-language children's literature, and the methodology of teaching physical education, visual arts, science, and music in a bilingual setting, supported by dedicated individual practice placements conducted in English.

Graduates plan and manage child-centered, differentiated pedagogical activities that support children's personality development, applying knowledge from psychology, pedagogy, methodology, and language skills to teach children aged three to six and support their motivation and thinking. The qualification allows graduates to work at pre-schools run by town councils, church foundations, or private organizations, and prepares them to continue their studies at the master's level; typical roles include day-care teacher and pre-school teacher.

Applicants must hold a secondary school certificate; those still completing secondary education may submit proof of enrollment or expected matriculation instead, provided they present their final certificate by the time of enrollment. Even applicants who already hold a higher education degree are only required to submit their secondary school certificate. Required documents include an application form, records from the final two years of secondary school, a motivation letter, a valid passport copy, and a general medical certificate confirming health and physical fitness, submitted using the faculty's official forms.

Since the program is taught entirely in English, applicants must demonstrate advanced (B2-level) English proficiency, assessed through an online interview rather than a mandatory external certificate, though submitting one is recommended.

Admission includes a set of oral aptitude assessments that applicants must all pass: a language aptitude test in English, a speech aptitude test, a physical aptitude exam submitted as video recordings, and a singing aptitude exam, followed by an interview of about 20 minutes. Final admission is based on a combined evaluation of academic performance from the submitted documents and the results of these assessments.

This PhD program combines coursework with research-based training, preparing students to conduct research to national and international standards in pedagogy and developing the academic research competencies needed to complete and defend a dissertation and pursue work in tertiary education or research. Credits are divided across four components: 33 percent from coursework, 5 percent from a complex examination, 45 percent from academic research, and 17 percent from teaching within tertiary education. Applications are submitted to one of eight thematic modules: Theoretical-Historical Pedagogy, Adult Learning and Education, Teacher Education and Higher Education Studies, Special Education, Sports and Health Promotion, Culture, Diversity, and Education, Early Childhood Education, and Learning, Instruction and Subject Pedagogies.

Supervisors support students' research and help introduce them to professional and academic life, drawing on their own research, teaching qualifications, and involvement in international research projects. The program combines and integrates multiple disciplines to generate research projects, and students regularly present their results at national and international scientific conferences.

Graduates are prepared for careers as researchers and academic staff, as well as related roles such as program associate, program manager, social service administrator, or research coordinator.

Applicants must hold a master's-level degree (MA or MSc) and are expected to contact a potential supervisor in advance to discuss their research plan and secure a supervisor's statement; if final examinations are still underway and the diploma has not yet been issued by the application deadline, a certification of expected graduation is accepted instead, though the diploma itself must be presented by enrollment at the latest. Applicants to the Sports and Health Promotion module specifically need a prior degree in education, pedagogy, teacher training, psychology, recreation, physical education teaching, sports coaching, sports management, health education, nutrition, or physiotherapy. This program is not available to Hungarian citizens.

English proficiency must reach C1 level in both speaking and writing, assessed during the oral entrance interview. Required documents include an application form, the master's degree certificate, a CV, a motivation letter, a research plan, a supervisor's statement, a copy of a valid passport, and a reference work — an academic paper written in English within the applicant's field of study, such as an MA thesis extract, research paper, seminar paper, research report, journal article, book chapter, case study, or literature review, ideally 5 to 15 pages excluding references and appendices. A letter of recommendation and a list of publications may also be submitted but are not required, and an official English translation of the MA certificate is needed if the original is not in English.

The oral entrance exam, held in person or online, is a roughly 30-minute interview with the head of the doctoral program and other faculty, focused on the feasibility of the applicant's research plan, their awareness of its theoretical and bibliographical background, their foreign language knowledge, and their previous research results and readiness for academic teaching. Final rankings combine this evaluation with an assessment of the applicant's submitted academic record.
