A Bachelor's in Computer Science in Europe typically runs 3 years in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Belgium — or 4 years in Ireland and the UK — under the Bologna Process, the continent-wide framework that ensures your degree is recognized across 49 countries. That shorter timeline means the total cost of a European Computer Science bachelor's is often lower than US or UK equivalents, even before accounting for tuition differences.

Tuition varies by country: public universities in Germany and Norway charge little to nothing even for non-EU students, while the Netherlands typically runs €2,000–€4,000/year for EU students. English-taught Computer Science programs are widely available — particularly at Dutch, Scandinavian, and Belgian universities — and usually require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for admission. Most programs also include Erasmus+ exchange eligibility, letting you spend a semester at another European university as part of your degree.

Computer Science ELTE – Eötvös Loránd University

This bachelor's program trains computer scientists with professional knowledge grounded in solid theoretical foundations, equipping them for software development, information systems design, and systems management across many domains. A computer scientist synthesizes an engineer's constructive approach with a mathematician's problem-solving mindset, often working as a mediator between the users and developers of information systems within large project teams. The program is delivered over three years in English.

The first year introduces computer systems and three parallel approaches to programming, covering general, imperative, and functional programming, alongside basic mathematics, learning methodology, and business fundamentals. This continues into programming languages, object-oriented programming, an introduction to web development, and the first installments of algorithms and data structures, discrete mathematics, and mathematical analysis.

The second year covers a further course in algorithms and data structures, web programming, programming technology, and continued work in mathematical analysis and the application of discrete models. This continues into operating systems, the first part of databases, software technology, the foundations of the theory of computation, and numerical methods.

The third year covers concurrent programming, telecommunication networks, artificial intelligence, a second databases course, further theory of computation, and probability and statistics. Alongside this core sequence, students choose from a wide range of compulsory elective courses offered across the later semesters, including GPU programming, cryptography and security, an introduction to machine learning, programming theory, compilers, Python, applied data science, the basics of cybersecurity, computer graphics, native cloud computing applications, and advanced web programming, together with a general elective allowance. The program concludes with a thesis, supported by a dedicated thesis consultation course.

Teaching is supported by dedicated computer labs for artificial intelligence, databases, and robotics, and new students are supported by more senior and PhD students through a mentoring system. Students can take part in extracurricular research supervised by faculty, presenting their findings at an annual faculty conference, and can study or take part in research for one or two semesters at a partner institution abroad.

Graduates find roles across international computer companies, Hungarian firms, banks, large enterprises, state institutions, software companies, and research institutes, working on tasks such as integrated data processing systems, electronic trade and payments, telecommunications and mobile programming, image recognition and processing, computer-aided design, and multimedia applications. Typical roles include computer programmer, software engineer, and web developer.
Applicants need sufficiently strong secondary school grades, particularly in mathematics, and must submit their secondary school certificate, records from their final two years of secondary school, a CV, a motivation letter, and a valid passport copy with photo.

Applicants must also demonstrate at least an intermediate (B1) level of English, in both speaking and writing.

Admission includes a written mathematics test covering secondary-school-level topics such as word problems, arithmetic and geometric series, number theory, functions, logic, fractions, inequalities, equation systems, and quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric equations. Applicants who score at least 50% are then invited to an English-language interview to confirm their intermediate level of spoken and comprehension skills.

Computer science bachelor's programs in Europe are more theoretical than many applicants expect — and that's deliberate. The strongest European CS programs teach you to think about computation: algorithms, data structures, theoretical computer science, and mathematical logic alongside programming. The goal is to produce engineers who understand why software behaves the way it does, not just how to write it. This foundation makes graduates significantly more adaptable than those trained primarily on specific frameworks and tools. The applied dimension is substantial throughout — project work, lab sessions, and often industrial internships keep the theory connected to practice.

Bachelor's in Computer Science: year by year

Year 1

Programming fundamentals, discrete mathematics, algorithms and data structures, and an introduction to systems. The mathematics content surprises many students — it's more rigorous than expected.

Year 2

Computer architecture, operating systems, databases, software engineering, and statistics. The theoretical depth increases; you begin building non-trivial systems.

Year 3

Specialization in your chosen track (AI, systems, security, HCI, etc.), larger software engineering projects, and a substantial thesis or capstone project.

Why Europe for Computer Science?

TU Delft, ETH Zurich, TU Munich, KTH, and many other European CS departments are globally respected. English-taught bachelor's are increasingly common in the Netherlands and Scandinavia. Proximity to major European tech hubs (Amsterdam, Berlin, Stockholm, London) makes internships during study genuinely accessible.
