What Admissions Committees Actually Look For
Beyond the checklist
Strong grades in mathematics and any available computing or programming subjects at secondary or bachelor's level. Evidence of programming ability — GitHub repositories, personal projects, or competition performance — is increasingly asked for or noticed.
For master's: a clear technical interest that the program specifically addresses. Cybersecurity, AI, systems, HCI — vague "I love computer science" applications don't distinguish themselves.
For research master's: demonstrated ability to work on open-ended technical problems — a strong bachelor's thesis, research publication, or open-source contribution.
Formal Requirements
Bachelor's Programs
- High school diploma with strong mathematics background
- Programming experience helpful but not always required
- English proficiency for English-taught programs
- Logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities
- Some programs require entrance examinations
Master's Programs
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field
- Programming proficiency in multiple languages
- Mathematics background (discrete math, statistics, linear algebra)
- English proficiency (IELTS 6.5+ or equivalent)
- Letters of recommendation
- Portfolio of projects or GitHub profile often helpful
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Presenting a portfolio of projects without demonstrating understanding of the underlying theory — programs that are research-oriented want depth, not just breadth.
Not meeting the mathematical prerequisites for programs that require real analysis or linear algebra — these are checked and gaps matter.
Missing hard Dutch application deadlines — January 15 for competitive CS master's programs at TU Delft and others is a real cutoff.
Application Timeline
12 months before: Research program tracks, build or clean up your technical portfolio, request references from supervisors who know your project work.
6–8 months before: Apply to Dutch, German, and Scandinavian programs. Prepare a technical CV and any required statement of purpose.
3–4 months before: UK and other programs. Some may require technical tests or coding assessments — practice in advance.
