What does postcolonial theory reveal about the European literary canon? How does genre function differently in different traditions? These programs read literature in original languages where possible and in translation where not. Strong language skills are expected. Literary Studies ELTE – Eötvös Loránd University

This PhD program prepares students to earn their doctorate by building mastery in scholarly research and writing, encouraging conference participation, developing teaching expertise in higher education, and offering opportunities to take part in departmental activities.

Doctoral study is offered in the following fields: Literary Theory and Cultural Studies, Comparative Literature, the Hungarian and European Renaissance, the Hungarian Baroque, the Hungarian and European Enlightenment, Romanticism, Hungarian Modernism, Hungarian Literature after 1945, the Folklore and Literature of the Uralic Peoples, Library and Information Science, Hungarian and Comparative Folklore, Medieval and Early Modern English Literature and Culture, Modern English and American Literature and Culture, American Studies, French Literature, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, Spanish and Portuguese Literatures, Russian Literature and Literary Studies, Slavic Literatures, Studies in German Literatures and Cultures, and Dutch and Scandinavian Studies.

Graduates gain specialized skills in languages and literary history, preparing them for high-level academic work, university teaching, and scholarly project work; typical career paths lead to research institutes, universities, museums, diplomacy, the press and media, and publishing companies.
Applicants must hold a master's diploma with at least a "good" qualification, and should contact the head of their intended doctoral program before applying. A letter of acceptance from a future supervisor is required, and applications are considered only for research topics offered by the doctoral school's supervisors.

English proficiency must reach at least B2 level in both speaking and writing, though the American Studies, Medieval and Early Modern English Literature and Culture, and Modern English and American Literature and Culture programs require C1 level. Proficiency is demonstrated through one of a specific set of accepted exams: TOEFL PBT (516-554), TOEFL iBT or iBT Home Edition (66-82), IELTS (6.0), CEFR (B2), or Duolingo (85). A prior Bachelor's or Master's diploma earned entirely in English is accepted as proof instead; native English speakers must instead present a B2-level or higher exam in another language.

Required documents include an application form, the master's degree certificate, an academic CV, a research work plan of 3 to 4 pages, two letters of recommendation, a language certificate, a letter of acceptance from the future supervisor, and, if available, a list of publications. Admission includes an oral interview, held in person or online, covering the applicant's prior university achievements, research plan, and scientific competence in their field of interest, with final rankings based on a combined evaluation of academic excellence and interview results.
