    If you are not an EU student and you plan to study in Sweden for a period of time longer than 3 months, you have to apply for a student residence permit before you come to Sweden.

    If your studies are shorter than 3 months, you may have to apply for a Schengen Visa in order for you to enter Europe depending on your nationality. [List of countries whose citizens don't require a visa to enter Europe].

    You may apply online for a student residence permit in Sweden. In your application, you will be required to attach the documents as listed below:

    • A letter of acceptance from your higher education institution in Sweden indicating that you have been admitted to full-time studies.
    • A copy of the pages in your passport where your personal data can be read. Make sure your passport is valid throughout the entire period of your stay in Sweden, since the Swedish Migration Board can't grant you residence permit once your passport has expired.
    • A copy of your health insurance plan.
    • A bank statement or copy of your grant/scholarship stating you can support yourself financially throughout your time as a student in Sweden.

    If your documents were not originally issued in Swedish or English, you are required to have them translated by an authorized translator.

    The cost of the application is 1000 SEK and the usual processing time is up to 2 months.

    In order for your student residence permit to be granted, you will need to prove you have, at least, 8010 SEK per month fo support yourself financially while you study in Sweden.

    • EU students have the right to reside in Sweden without applying for a residence permit provided they have sufficient means to support themselves financially.

    • Make sure you have your European Health Insurance Card.

    EU students who have sufficient means to support themselves financially during their studies have the right to reside in Sweden without the need for a residence permit.

    If you also stay in Sweden for a period of time of over 5 years, you will also be granted permanent residence.
