NIE and TIE Registration for Japanese Students in Spain

Register at the Oficina de Extranjería within 30 days of arriving in Spain for your TIE card and NIE number. For Japanese students accustomed to Japan's efficient government systems, Spanish bureaucracy may feel slower — but the process is straightforward if you book your appointment early and prepare documents carefully.

TIE Registration Process

  1. Book appointment online: sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es — select "Toma de Huella — Expedición/Renovación de TIE." Book immediately on arrival.
  2. Complete EX-17 form: Download from Spanish Ministry of Interior website.
  3. Pay Tasa 790 (Código 012): ~€16 at any Spanish bank.
  4. Documents: Passport (original + copy), student visa (original + copy), university enrollment certificate (get from secretaría on arrival), 1 passport photo, EX-17 form, Tasa 790 receipt.
  5. Attend appointment: Fingerprints, photo, appointment receipt as interim document.
  6. Collect TIE: 30–60 days later with passport and receipt.
  7. Renew annually: 60 days before expiry with updated enrollment certificate.
