Slovakia's university admissions are entirely managed by each institution. The country is best known internationally for its English-taught medicine programs, with Comenius University in Bratislava being the flagship. The application process is direct and typically online.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Select your program

Key institutions: Comenius University (medicine, law, natural sciences), Slovak University of Technology STU (engineering, architecture), University of Economics Bratislava (business and economics), Slovak Medical University (healthcare). Browse at studyinslovakia.sk.

Apply online through the university portal

Comenius University uses e-prihlaska.uniba.sk. STU uses is.stuba.sk. Most portals require creating an account, filling in the form, and uploading documents electronically. Pay the application fee (€30–€100).

Apply for medicine in December–January — spots fill early and the deadline is firm.

Upload supporting documents

Submit: certified copies of all diplomas and transcripts (with official Slovak or English translations), proof of English proficiency (IELTS 6.0+ or equivalent), passport, and CV. Medicine requires evidence of biology and chemistry study.

Entrance exam (most programs)

Almost all Slovak university programs require an entrance exam or interview. For medicine: a written test in biology and chemistry (held at the faculty in May). For engineering and sciences: mathematics test. For law and humanities: oral interview.

Comenius medicine entrance exams are held in Bratislava — book your travel early as many international applicants sit the same dates.

Receive admission decision

Decisions are issued in June–July. Accept your offer and pay a tuition deposit or first installment to confirm enrollment.

Apply for a Slovak student visa (non-EU)

Apply for a Slovak National Visa type D (for study) at the Slovak embassy. Bring: acceptance letter, proof of tuition payment, proof of financial means, health insurance, and accommodation confirmation. Processing: 30–60 days.

Register in Slovakia on arrival

Register your address at the local Foreigners' Police within 3 days of arrival. Apply for a Temporary Residence Permit for Study at the Foreign Police Department — bring your acceptance letter, financial proof, accommodation, and health insurance.
