  • Residence permit in Finland for non-EU students

    If you intend to stay in Iceland for less than 3 months

    You may have to apply for a Schengen Visa (if you intend to stay up to 90 days) or a visa type D (if you wish to stay more than 90 days but less than 180 days) at your local Icelandic embassy or consulate.

    Students form certain countries do not require a visa to enter Iceland.

    If you intend to stay in Iceland for more than 3 months

    You are required to apply for a student residence permit before you come to study in Iceland at your local Icelandic embassy or consulate.

    In your application, you will be required to enclose the documents as listed below:

    • The filled-in application form.
    • The letter of acceptance from your higher education institution in Iceland indicating that you have been admitted to full-time studies.
    • A copy of your health insurance plan. Please, note that the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration requires a health insurance to cover, at least, 2000000 ISK, and from a company that is able to operate in Iceland.
    • A proof of sufficient financial means or copy of your grant/scholarship stating you can support yourself financially throughout your time as a student in Iceland.
    • Documentation confirming your accommodation details. You are able to submit this document within 2 weeks of your arrival in Iceland.
    • A criminal record certificate from each country where you have resided within the last 5 years prior to coming to Iceland.
    • The receipt to prove you have paid the application fee, which is 12000 ISK.

    Please, note that all documents must be officially translated into English or any of the Scandinavian languages, i.e., Icelandic, Faroese, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.

    The Icelandic Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun) will process your application as soon as all documentation has been submitted. Therefore, we recommend you to apply for a residence permit to study in Iceland with plenty of time in advance before your studies begin. In general the processing time is 90 days for applications for a residence permit as a student.

    The cost of the application is 12000 ISK and you will be required to prove you have, at least, 163635 ISK per month to support yourself financially.

  • Residence permit in Iceland for EU students

    Quick guide

    • EU students may reside in Iceland without applying for a residence permit. However, you need to register at the Icelandic Population Registry.
    • Application form.
    • Financial resources: 163635 ISK / month.
    • Make sure you have your European Health Insurance Card.

    EU students don't need to apply for a residence permit to stay in Iceland. Instead, EU students are requested to register at the Icelandic Population Registry (Þjóðskrá).
