How to Apply to Universities in Greece

Undergraduate non-EU: apply through the Ministry quota

Download the application form from the Greek Ministry of Education website. Submit it to the Greek embassy or consulate in your home country between April and June. Attach certified, Apostilled, and Greek-translated academic documents.

EU undergraduate: apply directly

EU/EEA students apply directly to Greek universities and typically must have their secondary school certificate recognized as equivalent by DOATAP (the Greek national academic recognition center).

DOATAP recognition can take 2–4 months — start this process early.

Postgraduate: apply directly to the university

Greek universities manage postgraduate admissions independently. Register on the university's online system, upload documents, and pay the application fee. English-taught master's programs typically accept applications from December to May.

Prepare certified and translated documents

All foreign documents must be: authenticated with an Apostille (or legalized for non-Hague countries), officially translated into Greek by a translator certified by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Only translators recognized by the Greek government can produce valid translations — check the official list.

Receive placement / admission decision

Ministry quota placements for undergraduates are announced by the Ministry in August–September. Postgraduate admissions are communicated by universities directly.

Apply for a student visa (non-EU)

Apply for a Greek National Visa type D at the Greek consulate. Required: placement/acceptance letter, proof of financial means (€6,000/year for the first year), health insurance, and accommodation proof.

Register at the university and AMKA

After arriving, register formally at the university. Apply for an AMKA (Greek Social Security Number) — required for health services — at the local KEP (Citizens' Service Center). Non-EU students apply for a residence permit at the police aliens department.
