Q: Do I need to speak Portuguese to study in Portugal?

International students in Portugal apply under the Estatuto de Estudante Internacional (International Student Statute), which gives them access to a dedicated application quota outside the domestic DGES system. Each public university sets its own deadlines and requirements within this framework.

Choose your program and university

Search programs at the universities of Lisbon (ULisboa), NOVA Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, and Minho. Use each university's website to check available programs, language of instruction, and tuition fees under the international student statute.

NOVA Lisbon has one of the strongest concentrations of English-taught programs.

Check equivalency of your qualifications

Portugal uses the DGES credential recognition system. For non-EU students, your secondary or bachelor's degree may need to be recognized as equivalent to the Portuguese level by the university's academic services.

Apply through the university portal

Each Portuguese university has an online application portal for international students. Submit your application, pay the application fee (typically €50–€125), and upload all required documents during the published application window (usually April–July).

Submit supporting documents

Required documents typically include: diplomas and transcripts (certified and officially translated into Portuguese), proof of Portuguese or English language skills, passport copy, and CV.

Official translations in Portugal are done by a "Tradutor Juramentado" — a sworn translator.

Receive conditional offer

Universities review applications within 3–6 weeks and issue conditional or final acceptance letters. Conditional offers may require submission of final results or additional documents.

Apply for a Type D4 Student Visa

After receiving your acceptance, apply for a Portuguese long-stay student visa (D4) at the Portuguese consulate. Required: acceptance letter, proof of financial means (€760/month), health insurance, accommodation confirmation, and registration fee receipt.

Processing takes 2–8 weeks depending on the consulate — apply in May for a September start.

Convert visa to residence permit in Portugal

After arriving in Portugal, schedule an appointment with SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras, now AIMA) to obtain your Residence Permit for Study Purposes. Do this within 4 months of arrival.
