Key scholarships for Kenyan students in Germany
DAAD EPOS (Development-Related Postgraduate Programs)
EPOS scholarships are for students and professionals from developing countries, including Kenya, who want to pursue a master's degree in Germany in a field related to development. Kenya is a priority country. Monthly stipend of approximately €850–€992 plus travel allowance and health insurance. Applications at daad.de/en/study-and-research-in-germany/scholarships/. DAAD In-Country / In-Region Scholarships
For Kenyan students who want to study at East African universities (University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Strathmore, or universities in Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania). Not Germany-specific but part of the DAAD East Africa program — can be a stepping stone to Germany for master's or doctoral research.
DAAD Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowship
For doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to work at Helmholtz research centers in Germany. Open to Kenyan researchers in natural sciences, engineering, energy, and health. Duration 1–2 years. Highly competitive but well-funded.
Deutschlandstipendium
Germany's national merit scholarship — €300/month — available to enrolled students of any nationality at participating German universities. Apply directly to your university once enrolled. Academic excellence is the main criterion.
German Political Foundation Scholarships
Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung offer scholarships to international students with strong social and academic engagement. All accept applications from Kenyan students. Stipends approximately €850–€1,000/month.
African Union Scholarships and Kenya Government Funding
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) in Kenya does not currently fund study abroad. Some government bursaries through the Kenya Education Fund may be available. Check with the Kenya Ministry of Education for any bilateral exchange programs with Germany.
