Scholarships for Chinese Students in Germany

DAAD, CSC, Deutschlandstipendium — the main funding routes for Chinese students.

Key scholarships for Chinese students in Germany

China Scholarship Council (CSC) — State Scholarship Fund

CSC (中国国家留学基金管理委员会) is China's primary scholarship body for study abroad. CSC-funded students typically receive a monthly stipend (¥3,000–¥3,500/month for master's; ¥3,500 for PhD students in Germany) plus a one-time settlement allowance. CSC has a joint program with DAAD for PhD students specifically going to Germany. Applications are made in China through CSC online (laihua.csc.edu.cn) and are highly competitive.

DAAD Scholarships for Chinese Students

DAAD offers individual scholarships for Chinese students at master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels. Monthly stipend €850–€1,200 depending on level. The DAAD Beijing office runs information events and advises on the process. Joint DAAD-CSC programs fund PhD research at German universities — applications require both a DAAD nomination and CSC approval.

Deutschlandstipendium

Germany's national merit scholarship — €300/month, funded half by the German government and half by private donors via individual universities. Available to enrolled students of any nationality with outstanding academic achievement. Applications directly to the university once enrolled. Many German universities have a significant number of Chinese Deutschlandstipendium holders.

German Political Foundation Scholarships

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, and Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung all support international students. Less commonly known among Chinese students but highly competitive and prestigious. Require strong academic performance and social/political engagement. Stipends of €850–€1,000/month plus benefits.

BMBF / DFG Research Funding

German federal research funding (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) fund bilateral research projects with China under the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (Chinesisch-Deutsches Zentrum für Wissenschaftsförderung). PhD students embedded in joint research projects may receive funding through their German supervisor's DFG grant.
