Spain hosts over 100,000 international students each year, drawn by its combination of world-class universities, extremely low public university tuition, and a quality of life that is hard to match in Europe. The admission process has two distinct elements for non-EU students: first getting your academic credentials officially recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education (homologación), and then applying to your chosen university. Understanding this two-step process and starting early are the keys to a smooth application.
Academic Qualifications
Homologación — Spain's credential recognition process
Spanish universities require a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato (two years of upper secondary education, typically at age 17–18). For non-EU applicants, this usually requires a formal credential recognition process called homologación, handled by the Spanish Ministry of Education (Ministerio de Educación, Formación Profesional y Deportes). Once recognized, your diploma is treated as equivalent to the Bachillerato and you can apply to Spanish universities. For Master's programs, a recognized three- or four-year Bachelor's degree is required. The recognition process for foreign Bachelor's degrees (also called homologación) is separate from the secondary school recognition.

How to Apply
Start the credential recognition process before applying to any university
- Submit your secondary school diploma to the Spanish Ministry of Education for homologación (credential recognition). This can be done through the nearest Spanish Embassy or consulate, or online via the Ministry's portal. Processing takes 3–6 months.
- While waiting for homologación, research your target universities and programs. Each Spanish university manages its own international admissions portal.
- Sit your Spanish language proficiency test (DELE B2 minimum for Spanish-taught programs) or prepare your IELTS/TOEFL results for English-taught programs.
- Prepare all required documents: transcripts, motivation letter, CV, passport copy, and any program-specific requirements.
- Submit your university application through the institution's online portal once you have your homologación certificate (or while it is being processed — confirm with each university).
- After receiving your admission letter, non-EU students must apply for a Spanish student visa (visado de estudios) at the nearest Spanish Embassy. After arriving in Spain, register at your local Oficina de Extranjería within 30 days to obtain a student residence card (TIE).

What Spain requires as proof of funds for your student visa
Non-EU students applying for a Spanish student visa must prove they have sufficient funds to cover living costs. Spanish immigration requires proof of approximately €600 per month — around €7,200 for a full academic year. This can be shown through a personal bank statement, a sponsor's financial guarantee, or a scholarship letter. Spanish public university tuition for non-EU students ranges from €750 to €3,500 per year for undergraduate programs (regional governments set the fees, so they vary by community). Private university fees are much higher.

Homologación takes 3–6 months and must be done before most universities will finalize your admission. Start this process as early as possible — ideally 6–12 months before your intended start date.
Translations must be produced by a sworn (jurado) translator officially recognized in Spain. Standard translations are not accepted.
