Applications to German public universities are made either directly to the institution or through uni-assist, a centralized portal used by many universities for international applicants. Deadlines typically fall in January (for summer semester) and July (for winter semester). Before applying, confirm whether your secondary school qualification is recognized — if not, you may need to complete a Studienkolleg, a one-year preparatory course leading to the Feststellungsprüfung assessment exam. Students from India, China, and Vietnam must additionally obtain an APS certificate verifying their academic documents before a visa can be issued. Once admitted, you apply for a national visa (Type D) at your local German consulate, supported by proof of admission, a valid blocked bank account, and health insurance coverage.
