What Admissions Committees Actually Look For
Beyond the checklist
A strong physics and mathematics background — quantum mechanics at bachelor's level is required for most master's programs. Chemistry background matters but is secondary.
Laboratory experience in relevant techniques — even basic experience with microscopy, spectroscopy, or cleanroom work is noticed and valued.
A specific research direction in your motivation letter: nanomedicine, nanoelectronics, nano energy, or nanofabrication. Vague interest in "the nanoscale" is common; specific interest in a research group's work is rare and valued.
Formal Requirements
Bachelor's Programs
- High school diploma with strong grades in physics, chemistry, and mathematics
- Interest in cutting-edge technology
- English proficiency for English-taught programs
- Strong analytical abilities
Master's Programs
- Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering
- Strong foundation in quantum mechanics and/or chemistry
- English proficiency (IELTS 6.5+ or equivalent)
- Letters of recommendation
- Research experience beneficial
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Applying to nanoscience master's without demonstrating sufficient quantum mechanics background — programs check this and will ask about it.
Not contacting potential supervisors before applying to research-focused programs.
Missing the January application deadlines for Dutch and Belgian programs.
Application Timeline
12 months before: Identify research groups, ensure quantum mechanics prerequisites are met, gain lab experience if possible.
6–8 months before: Apply to Belgian, Dutch, and Scandinavian programs.
3–4 months before: UK and German programs with later deadlines.
