Program summary: This bachelor's program prepares students to manage projects and create content for news portals, corporate websites, social media, advertising, and the entertainment industry, taught by an international team of instructors focused on the standards shaping global digital culture.

The first year introduces academic and technical communication in English, the elements of media culture, introductory informatics, and an introduction to linguistics, alongside the start of a second foreign language. This continues with the study of logic, the grammatical structure of language, and writing for media, together with continued foreign-language study and an elective in either media philosophy or sustainable development.

The second year builds content-creation and language skills through creative writing, phonology, current trends in applied linguistics, and web content creation and publishing, followed by discourse and communication, lexicology, public speaking, and technical writing combined with user experience principles, alongside continued foreign-language study throughout both years.

The third year introduces the ethics of artificial intelligence, semantics and pragmatics, and multimedia elements, with the option to continue a foreign language such as French, German, Russian, Spanish, or Swedish toward an advanced level, and includes a first block of competence electives drawn from fields such as business and management, design, digital marketing, neuroscience, public governance, or translation. This continues into academic writing and a substantial product development project, alongside a further set of competence electives from the same range of fields.

In the fourth year, students study image syntax, work on a project in linguistic analysis, apply research methods to language, text, and discourse, and develop storytelling techniques for communities, again supported by elective competence modules. The program concludes with a bachelor's degree final project and a professional internship.

Students learn to describe career paths and the specifics of content creation, apply professional communication, use information technology in academic and professional contexts, and analyze both traditional and new media. Practical work involves creating audiovisual and text-based content using industry-standard design and web-publishing tools. The program is part of an international language-education framework that allows students to spend up to half of their studies at partner universities in Spain and France, with additional input from professional language-industry experts.

Students can choose to follow a challenge-based learning path, deepening their knowledge by working through practical challenges and short micro-modules.

Alternatively, students may pursue an innovation development path, creating real innovations in the form of products or services in partnership with outside organizations.

Students interested in broadening their expertise beyond their main field can choose an interdisciplinary competence path, selecting a set of study modules from a different discipline according to their interests.

A pedagogy path is also available for students who wish to gain a teaching qualification by completing additional coursework in education.

Graduates go on to work as digital media strategists, planning and implementing creative communication strategies across digital platforms; as content developers and bloggers, producing visual and written content that builds community and sustains audience interest; or as transmedia storytellers, creating immersive, cross-platform storytelling experiences that combine video, audio, text, and interactive elements, including virtual and augmented reality.
Applicants must hold a high school certificate obtained no more than three years before applying, with a minimum average grade of above 60% in each relevant entry subject, and must demonstrate English proficiency through an IELTS score of at least 5.5, a TOEFL score of at least 75, a CEFR level of at least B2, or an equivalent qualification. A school transcript must be submitted in English, accompanied by official translations and certified copies where the original is unavailable, and all documents must be legalized with an apostille from the issuing country's foreign affairs ministry, except for documents issued within the EU or in Belarus and Ukraine.

Admission is based on a weighted score in which the English language final exam accounts for 50%, a final exam in history, geography, mathematics, or information technologies accounts for 30%, and an oral motivation assessment accounts for the remaining 20%.

Literature, Visual Culture and Film Studies Estonian Academy of Arts

This master's degree develops the analytical skills needed to study literature, film, and visual culture as interconnected forms of meaning rather than as separate disciplines. Delivered jointly across two institutions, the program draws on expertise in literature, film studies, art history, and visual culture, allowing students to approach cultural questions from multiple perspectives within a single, coherent course of study, taught through small, seminar-based classes centered on interpretation, argument, and independent analysis across historical and contemporary contexts.

The two-year program moves from shared theoretical foundations toward increasingly independent research. Core seminars introduce key concepts in cultural theory and analysis, such as culture, nation, power, space, gender, and memory, alongside a seminar tracing major thinkers in critical theory and the social analysis of images, from historical philosophy through to contemporary visual and cultural studies. A dedicated course examines the relationship between words and images across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, while a sequence of interdisciplinary seminars approaches literary texts, films, and visual culture through thematic lenses that vary by year, such as dystopia, ecocritical approaches, memory and trauma, or postcolonial studies. Additional coursework introduces narratology and film analysis methods and their practical application, along with a seminar on adaptation across media that considers literary, film, and video game adaptations in relation to historical and cultural context, authorship, and genre.

During the second and third semesters, students take part in practical training organized in collaboration with cultural institutions and international literary, art, and film festivals in the host city, designed to support their research interests and critical engagement with cultural institutions rather than to provide vocational training. At the end of the second semester, students submit a thesis research proposal and select a supervisor, and the fourth semester is dedicated entirely to writing the thesis within a dedicated master's seminar, culminating in a public thesis defense.

Students benefit from a compact, culturally rich host city with an extensive network of literary, film, and visual culture institutions and festivals, allowing archives, exhibitions, screenings, and public debate to inform coursework and research alongside academic study. Close engagement with faculty supports the development of individual research interests from early in the program, within an international student community whose diverse backgrounds contribute to a comparative approach to the study of culture. The program is research-centered, providing a strong foundation for students who wish to pursue doctoral study, while also equipping graduates with the interpretive and critical thinking skills relevant to a range of careers requiring cultural judgment and the ability to work with complexity.
Applicants must hold a completed bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification and provide proof of English proficiency. Admission is decided through an entrance exam consisting of both written and oral components. The written component requires a one- to two-page statement of research interests and a ten-page writing sample, either an excerpt from the applicant's bachelor's thesis or, if no thesis was written, academic essays completed during their studies or published scholarly articles; if the original writing sample was not written in English, applicants must submit an English translation, which does not need to be notarized.

Applicants are assessed on a points scale across three components: the statement of research interest, worth up to 30 points with a minimum of 21 required; the writing sample together with previous academic performance, also worth up to 30 points with a minimum of 21 required; and an interview, worth up to 40 points with a minimum of 28 required. Only applicants who meet the minimum thresholds on the statement of research interest and writing sample are invited to the interview stage, which is conducted online before an examination board of at least two members and evaluates the applicant's motivation and clarity of goals, their ability to develop and refine a research plan, their analytical ability, and their oral communication skills. Final admission is based on the combined score across all three components.
