How to Get Into an Engineering Program in Europe

Engineering admissions in Europe range from relatively accessible (many programs accept students with strong high school maths and physics) to highly competitive (TU Delft, ETH Zurich, TU Munich attract global applicants and have meaningful rejection rates).

What Admissions Committees Actually Look For

Beyond the checklist

1

Strong mathematics and physics at secondary school or bachelor's level — this is non-negotiable. Weak quantitative backgrounds are the most common reason for rejection at engineering programs.

2

For master's programs: a specific engineering specialization and evidence you've engaged with it seriously. Project work, internships, and a strong bachelor's thesis are more valuable than a marginally higher GPA.

3

Language competence: English at B2-C1 level for English-taught programs is standard. German B2 may be required for German university lab environments even in English-taught programs.

Formal Requirements

BSc/BA

Bachelor's Programs

  • High school diploma with excellent grades in mathematics and physics
  • Chemistry required for chemical engineering
  • English proficiency for English-taught programs
  • Some programs require entrance examinations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills demonstrated

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applying to highly competitive programs (ETH Zurich, TU Delft) without researching the realistic acceptance criteria — these programs receive thousands of applications and the bar is genuinely high.

Generic motivation letters describing a childhood passion for engineering; successful applications articulate specific engineering problems or areas and why this program specifically addresses them.

Missing Studielink deadlines for Dutch programs — January 15 for popular tracks is a hard cutoff.

Application Timeline

12 months before: Research programs, identify specializations, request reference letters from engineering professors who know your project work.

6–8 months before: Submit applications to Dutch, German, and Scandinavian programs.

3–4 months before: UK and other programs. Prepare for any required entrance assessments.
