How to Get Into a Business Program in Europe

Business program admissions in Europe span an enormous range of selectivity.

What Admissions Committees Actually Look For

Beyond the checklist

1

Extracurricular and work experience matter more in business than in science degrees — volunteering, student societies, internships, and part-time jobs all contribute to a profile. Academic grades alone rarely distinguish business applications.

2

Analytical capability demonstrated credibly — strong quantitative grades, relevant professional experience, or GMAT/GRE scores for MBA programs.

3

Specific career direction in your personal statement. "I want to work in business" is not a motivation. "I want to develop sustainability strategy at a European FMCG company and here is why this program specifically addresses that" is.

Formal Requirements

BSc/BA

Bachelor's Programs

  • High school diploma with good overall grades
  • Mathematics proficiency
  • English proficiency for English-taught programs
  • Extracurricular activities and leadership experience valued
  • Some programs require interviews

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applying to top business schools without work experience for programs that expect it (many master's programs, essentially all MBA programs).

Writing a motivation letter that describes generic ambition without demonstrating knowledge of the program's specific strengths or faculty.

Not researching the difference between MBA, MiM (Master in Management), and specialized MSc programs — they're very different products.

Application Timeline

12 months before: Gain relevant experience (internship, part-time role), prepare GMAT if required, research programs carefully.

6–8 months before: Apply to Dutch, German, and Scandinavian programs and any with early deadlines.

3–4 months before: Apply to UK, Spanish, and Italian programs. Prepare for interviews at selective schools.
