What Admissions Committees Actually Look For
Beyond the checklist
A molecular biology or biochemistry foundation in your academic background. Applications from students without cell biology and genetics preparation are typically unsuccessful.
Laboratory experience — cell culture, molecular cloning, fermentation, or analytical techniques. For master's programs, lab experience is more important than a marginal GPA advantage.
A specific focus in your motivation letter: which type of biotechnology and which industry? The more specific your direction, the more credible your application.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Applying to pharmaceutical biotech master's without industry or research laboratory experience — programs in Belgium and the Netherlands receive strong applications and prioritize practical competence.
Not demonstrating knowledge of the regulatory framework for biotechnology products (EMA, EU regulations); applications that engage with this context stand out.
Applying only to the highest-ranked programs without considering excellent programs at less well-known institutions.
