Biotechnology is one of the few scientific disciplines that touches almost every part of how modern societies function — and that breadth is what makes it worth understanding before you choose it. The most visible applications are medical: new therapies developed from living cells, diagnostic tools that identify disease at the molecular level, and proteins engineered to do precisely what synthetic chemistry cannot. But the field extends well beyond healthcare. Industrial biotechnology uses microorganisms and enzymes to manufacture chemicals, textiles, and materials more efficiently and cleanly than conventional processes. This master's program offers two specializations: Biophysics and Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The Biophysics track focuses on the physical principles of biological systems and includes courses in biomatter physics, membrane biophysics, and transport processes. The Biochemistry and Biotechnology specialization is divided into multiple tracks such as Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Molecular Cell Biology and Microbiology, and Molecular Physiology. Students in this path study areas like biomolecular modeling, signal transduction, microbial genetics, and biotechnology of plants and animals. Applicants to this master's program must hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Biophysics, Biomedical Sciences, Physics, or Bioengineering. The exact eligibility depends on the chosen specialization—Biophysics or Biochemistry and Biotechnology—and is determined by the Admissions Board. Applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency with one of the following: TOEFL (minimum score of 94), IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0), or Cambridge (minimum 185). Exemptions apply only to students who completed an English-taught degree in Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States. Additional documents like course descriptions and grading systems are required unless the applicant comes from a top 200 ranked university or a partner institution.

Agricultural Biotechnology Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences

This master's program provides in-depth knowledge in genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, and biotechnology with applications in agriculture. This master's program requires applicants to submit a letter of motivation explaining their interest in the course, along with an official copy of their bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts. Applicants must also provide a brief Curriculum Vitae. Proficiency in English at the B2 level is mandatory. Accepted language certificates include TOEFL (minimum of 550 on PBT or 72 on iBT), IELTS (minimum 6.0), Cambridge First Certificate (grade “C” or at least 160), and Pearson PTE or Academic PTE (minimum 59), among others. English test results must be official and valid. Alternatively, applicants may submit proof that the entire bachelor's program was conducted in English through an official signed and stamped certificate. Degrees earned in English-speaking countries are also accepted. However, DUOLINGO and EF SET tests are not considered valid proof of English proficiency.
