Residence permit for EU/EEA students
Although applying for a residence permit to stay in the Netherlands for the purpose of study is not compulsory for EU/EEA students, it is always useful to obtain a registration certificate as you will be asked for it if you open a bank account or when approaching the Tax Agency if you are offered a job.
How to register as an EU student
Please, follow the steps as explained below:
01 Register at the municipality or at the Aliens Police office where you are residing
02 Schedule an appointment with the IND office (Immigration and Naturalization Service / Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst). The IND office will send you a written confirmation of the appopintment and an application form within 5 working days. In general, you can have an appointment within 2 weeks

03 Fill in the application form and attach the requested documents. In general, you will be required to have a proof of your identity (for example, a passport), a health insurance certificate (for example, the European health care card), a proof of sufficient means of subsistence and proof of registration at an educational institution
04 On the day of your appointment, you will be issued a registration certificate in the form of a sticker on you passport or other document you are using to prove your identity
Residence permit for non-EU students
If you are not an EU student and intend to study in the Netherlands for a period of time longer than 90 days, you will have to apply for an authorization for temporary stay (called MVV - Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) at the Dutch embassy or consulate in the country where you are residing before coming to the Netherlands.
Besides EU/EEA students, nationals from the following countries don't need the MVV before coming to the Netherlands: Australia, Canada, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, United States.
Students without an MVV
If you are a student form a country whose citizens don't need an MVV to enter the Netherlands, you will have to apply for a residence permit within 72 hours after entering the country at the Immigration office (IND).

Students with an MVV
If you are a student form a country whose citizens need an MVV before entering the Netherlands, the process of applying for your residence permit will be partially carry out by your Dutch educational institution as explained below:
01 The institution where you will be studying will apply for a provisional residence permit at the Immigration office (IND)
02 If the application is accepted, you will have to apply yourself for a provisional residence permit at the embassy or consulate of the country where you are residing
03 Use your provisional residence permit to enter the Netherlands. Once in the country, report to the Aliens Police. After that, your educational institution will apply for a temporary residence permit on your behalf
