The Swedish grading system

The Swedish grading system varies depending on the level of education.

  • Most Swedish universities use the grade letter scale as seen on the table below:
International scale Swedish scale
A
(Excellent)

MVG - Mycket väl godkänd

B
(Very good, with few errors)
VG - Väl godkänd
E
(Good, with some errors. This is the minimum passing grade)
G - Godkänd
F
(Fail)
IG - Icke godkänd

In some cases, specific courses are graded using two grades: G - Godkänd (pass) or U - Underkänd (Fail)

  • If you are applying for university studies in Sweden as an undergraduate student, your grades from upper secondary school from your home country will be converted into a grade point scale with a maximum grade point of 20 and a minimum grade point of 10.

If you are an EU student, you can easily convert your grade point with the European Grade Converter
