Application for residence permit in Sweden

If you are not an EU/EEA student and you plan to study in Sweden for a period of time longer than 3 months, you have to apply for a residence permit before coming to Sweden. Please, observe that the residence permit is only temporary and intended to register students while enrolled at university or college in Sweden. Students from certain countries must also apply for a Schengen Visa to enter Europe.

What documents do you need to apply for a residence permit in Sweden?

  • The filled-in application form

  • The letter of acceptance from your higher education institution indicating that you have been admitted to full-time studies
  • A copy of the pages in your passport where personal data can be read
  • Two passport-sized photos not older than 6 months
  • A copy of your health insurance plan
  • A bank statement or copy of your grant/scholarship stating you can support yourself financially throughout your time as a student in Sweden
  • The receipt to prove you have paid your application fee

How much does it cost to apply for a residence permit in Sweden?

The application fee an adult has to pay is 1,000 SEK (approximately 97 EUR).

Where do you have to pay the application fee?

You may pay the application fee at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your country.

How much is the minimum financial subsistence requirement?

You will be asked to prove you have at least 7,300 SEK (approximately 727 EUR) per month to support yourself financially. In the event you plan to study in Sweden for a period of time of one year or more you will have to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself financially for at least 10 months per year.

Who is exempted from paying the application fee?

  • EU/EEA students. In addition, EU/EEA students can apply for a residence permit once they are in Sweden
  • Family members of EU/EEA citizens
  • Citizens of Japan
  • Citizens of Switzerland and their family members
