If you are not an EU/EEA student and you plan to study in Hungary for a period of time longer than 3 months, you have to apply for a residence permit. Please, observe that the residence permit is only temporary and intended to register students while enrolled at university or college in Hungary. Students from certain countries must also apply for a Schengen Visa to enter Europe.

What documents do you need to apply for a residence permit in Hungary?

• The filled-in application form, called "Application for residence permit for the purpose of studies"

• The certificate of matriculation at an educational institution in Hungary. Please, observe this is not the letter of acceptance
• A copy of the pages in your passport where personal data can be read
• A recent passport-sized photo (not older than 6 months)
• A copy of your health insurance plan
• A bank statement or copy of your grant/scholarship stating you can support yourself financially throughout your time as a student in Hungary
• Documentation confirming your accommodation details

The application fee is 60 EUR.

Where do you apply for a residence permit in Hungary?

If you have the right to enter Hungary without the need for a residence permit or visa, which is the case of EU/EEA students and other countries, you may apply at your nearest Office of Immigration and Nationality (OIN).

If you are not an EU/EEA student or you need a visa to enter Europe, you can apply for a residence permit at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in the country where you are residing.

Where do you have to pay the application fee?

You may pay the application fee at the Hungarian embassy when you submit your application.

How much is the minimum financial subsistence requirement?

According to the Act II of 2007 on the Entry and Stay of Third Country Nationals, section 13, 1 (f), students must prove they have sufficient funds to cover the costs for their education, accommodation and living during their intended period of stay in Hungary. However, the Act does not specify a certain amount of funding.

How long does it take to process an application for residence permit?

The Hungarian Office of Immigration and Nationality will process your application as soon as all documentation has been submitted. In general the processing time is 15 days for applications for a residence permit as a student.

EU/EEA students and those students who don't need a visa to enter Europe, have to register at the nearest Office of Immigration and Nationality shortly after their arrival in Hungary.
