How to transfer courses among institutions in Europe

The academic year is over and you might be heading for your holidays now. This is a perfect opportunity to think about what you would like to do with your career in the future. For example, you may decide to study abroad in Europe in another institution different from where you started and would like to transfer your couses. If so, below I explain you the usual procedure you will have to follow:

01 Decide which institution and study program you would like to enroll in. Be sure you select programs that have similar subjects/courses in order for you to be able to transfer as many courses as possible

02 Gather information about the courses you’ve passed, such as course name, description, objectives and outcomes. Your institution should be able to provide you with a document that contains course information. If your courses followed the ECTS system, you will also have to indicate the number of ECTS attached to those courses. However, if you studied outside Europe, your courses will most probably not follow the ECTS system. If this is your case, you will have to indicate the number of hours each course was worth

03 If needed, get your documents translated. Most institutions in Europe require documents to be translated into English if they were not originally issued in English

04 Schedule a meeting with your new study program coordinator to request an evaluation of your previous studies. Usually, you and your coordinator will agree on which courses will be recognized into your new study program

05 Keep in mind that you might not receive an equivalent grade corresponding to what you achieved at your home institution. In some cases, the recognition of grades will be just a "pass" or "fail" grade. Think of it before you accept the initial recognition, since some study programs take your grade point average from previous students into account when evaluating your application. Additionally, although some coordinators might be tempted to match courses based on their names, you should emphasize the outcomes of your passed courses as recommended by the EUA (European University Association)

Welcome to Europe!
