Get off on the right foot as an international student in Europe

Have you been admitted to higher education studies in Europe? Congratulations! Although you might still be enjoying your holidays, the new academic year is just a few weeks away. Here I give you some tips and advice to help you get off on the right foot as an international student in Europe.

  • Have you been offered accommodation by your university or college? If not, you should start looking for various options on the Internet already before your departure. Although some institutions many not offer accommodation to their international students, they may help you find a place for you to stay while studying
  • Try to arrive in your new city some days before the first day of class so that you get used to the place. Find the location of supermarkets in your neighborhood, bus/subway stations, your nearest health care center, etc
  • Don’t forget to always carry a map of the city and school. You may need it to find your way and not get lost
  • Some universities or colleges prepare induction days for international students. Learn when and where they are held and participate. You will not only be meeting other students like you, but you will also be having so much fun
  • Attend your very first day of class. This is usually when your teacher explains about the contents of the course, if there are projects or assignments, how each course element will be evaluated, if there are old exams for you to practice, and other valuable tips to facilitate your learning
  • Never be afraid of talking to your new classmates. After all, you have nothing to loose and you may make very good friends you would have never met had you not talked to them!
  • Ask, ask, ask. It is always preferrable to say you have not understood an idea or don’t know how to do something that’s new to you than wasting precious time trying to figure it out by yourself

Welcome to Europe!
